| Arizona Caliente Prepare for their first game of the Inaugural WAFL Season - SunFire Announce Venue Change
October 25th, 2001 (Phoenix, AZ)
The Inaugural Season schedule has been released and the pocket schedules have been distributed, now all the Arizona Caliente have left to do is play some football and win.
The Arizona Caliente have been conditioning and preparing for over 5 months, and have had over 60 women participating in the full-contact tackel football Pre-Season practice that began Sept. 15th.
They look to be a true force in the Pacific Conference of the Women's American Football League (WAFL), and will have their chance to prove themselves on November 3rd, 2001 when the participate in their first game verses the San Diego SunFire.
To accommodate a coaching conflict, the San Diego SunFire have announced a venue change, and will play their Inaugural season opener at Southwestern College against the Arizona Caliente, instead of at their original home field - Balboa Stadium.
The SunFire coaching staff will give new meaning to pulling "double duty" on November 3rd. The staff will work both the San Diego women's pro team and the men's semi-pro team at the same time!! 7:05p Kickoff! Head coach Michael Dance will split the crew in two, alternating quarters between games to keep an eye on both contests.
The situation only arose about a week ago, when the Saints - due to playoff placement - were scheduled in a wildcard game for the November 3rd date - originally set aside for the SunFire's season opener.
With the Saints playing at Chula Vista High and the SunFire at Balboa Stadium, it would've been quite a feat for Coach Dance to maintain a presence at both games. So, to accommodate the coaching staff, SunFire Owner/GM, Donna Fox, arranged with Southwestern College to host the Inaugural Home Opener, just a mere 2 miles from the Saints game site. Ms. Fox believed this to be the only logical solution. "Coach Dance has been a fantastic teacher and the players have really developed a great deal of faith in his ability. Half a game of Coach Dance's presence is much better than none."
