The Women's Affiliated Football Conference (WAFC) is proud to kick off their
venture with the unveiling of their new website www.wafcfootball.com.
The mission of the WAFC is to provide a structured plan for women's football
teams committed to success. The objective of the WAFC is to protect the integrity
of existing teams and to provide a place for quality teams to play without committing
them to a league that has not yet met all of their objectives or proven their legitimacy
and viability. The WAFC will work to secure the future of women's football for all
players by working with other reputable women's sports organizations.
The Women's Affiliated Football Conference is made up of multiple divisions
of women's football teams in different cities who have decided to work
together to play football for the Fall 2002 Season. WAFC member teams
include a majority of former Women's American Football League (WAFL)
2001-2002 teams, who made the decision to unite and leave the WAFL, following
a poorly handled year by WAFL League Officials.
"We (the group of teams) were looking for something that would protect both
our players and our investments. We had established the legitimacy of our
teams in completing a full season in 2001-2002, with little to no help from
the league level. It was the commitment of the owner's that made the season
a success, and it was those owners that we (the Arizona Caliente) wanted to
stay affiliated with," said Jennifer Cada, owner and general manager of the
Arizona Caliente.
The strength of the team owners showed through during the Women's World Bowl
I on February 24th, 2002 in San Diego, CA. Hosted by San Diego SunFire Foundation,
the WWBI brought together the Pacific Conference Champions, California Quake,
verses the Atlantic Conference Champions, Jacksonville Dixie Blues. The League
gave no support to any of the teams involved, in fact, there were no "League
Officials" even present at the game. It was this kind of lack of league
support, along with charges of fraud and misrepresentation against the WAFL,
that led the teams to seek organization elsewhere.
The WAFC Fall 2002 Season is scheduled for kickoff September 7th, 2002.
Currently representing 12 teams, teams set to be a part of the WAFC include
WAFL 2001-2002 Women's World Bowl Champions the California Quake, Central
Pacific Division Champions the Sacramento Sirens and the South Atlantic
Division Champions the Tampa Bay Force.
Teams may individually associate with any other league or team for play
outside of the WAFC Season, as long as the team they are playing against does
not conflict with a member team of the WAFC's territory. Exception will be
made if the team whose territory is in question, concedes to that arrangement
prior to that game being arranged. Respecting fellow WAFC teams, and their
objectives is the priority of the WAFC.
"The WAFC will provide teams an opportunity to thoroughly research existing
leagues to establish their legitimacy and viability before becoming full
members." Pointed out Sacramento Sirens owner Gayle Totton. The Sacramento
Sirens and the Oakland Banshees have also joined the Independent Women's
Football League (IWFL) as exhibition teams for Spring/Fall 2002.
