| WAFL Pre-Season Exhibition All Star Game a Success
LAS VEGAS, NV (August 6th, 2001)
ATLANTIC CONFERENCE 19 PACIFIC CONFERENCE 0
Despite controlling the ball and the clock most of the game, the Pacific fell to the Atlantic in the Women's American Football League Pre-season Exhibition match up by a final score of 19 to zero.
The game was held Saturday night, August 4th 2001, at Foothill High School's Falcon Stadium, in Henderson, Nevada. Although designed as an East vs. West rivalry, many players who will be playing in this season's Pacific Conference were representing the Atlantic Conference with teams they had formerly played with from the East Coast.
9 signed Arizona Caliente athletes- playing in their first ever full contact game - represented the Caliente on the Pacific side: (4)Dana Riedel RB/DB, (10)Kim Corbett QB/LB, (12)JaimeLee Lawler QB/DB, (19)Winter Barry RB/LB, (34)Rachel Settles - LB/FB , (56)Falonia Edenburgs OL/DL, (68)Ashlee Dixon OL/DL, (69)Arlena Reed OL/DL and (80)Kasandra Davis WR/SS.
"The Caliente women were outstanding", said Caliente Head Coach Gerry Turley who served as Offensive Coordinator for the Pacific team, and helped coach both teams Offensive lines during the mini-camp. "We sent a lot of our rookie players to play out of their normal positions just to get some exposure to the whole experience - 2 of strongest Quarterbacks went and played strictly defense. I think we (the Caliente organization) really established ourselves as contenders in the league."
Arizona Caliente Defensive Coordinator Coach Frank Newkirk also coached the women in Las Vegas, and was not only impressed by the caliber of athletes from across the United States, but was particularly excited about the level of talent he saw in the Caliente players.
Jennifer Cada, General Manager of the Arizona Caliente, was also optimistic about what she saw from her team. "It was such a great opportunity for the women who have never played full-contact football to get the chance to dive right in with many experienced players." Cada brags, "Arizona has a lot of talent, and I couldn't be more proud of our performance. We sent 9 of our rookies to play for the Pacific Conference, but we also had 4 experienced national players playing on the Atlantic side that are planning to sign with the Caliente this season as well, so there is no doubt in my mind that the Arizona Caliente will be a dominant force in the WAFL"
Atlantic Head Coach KC Carter (Indianapolis Vipers) was pleased with his team as they constantly stopped sustained drives by the Pacific Conference. And although, Pacific Head Coach Al Burrell (Rose City Wildcats) and his team managed to lead the game in all stats they failed in the one that mattered most points.
Representatives from Rose City (Portland), Vancouver, Arizona, California (Orange County), Sacramento, Japan, South Florida, Minnesota, San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Tampa Bay, San Diego, Orlando, New Orleans and dozens of free agents had a really learning experience and a great time in Las Vegas and are all going back home excited to prepare for the upcoming season.
